FORMS

Concept

A ‘Form’ is just as much of an aesthetic as it is a set of characters. The project began as a simple observation: We tend to ignore authentic structure and glorify appearance. Although our appearance is an important signifier of who we are, it is just that; a signifier. The things that we see with our eyes, are not the truth of a thing at all. In the same way, words and language are merely describers of the true essence of something.

There is beauty in a blank form, a standard model, “bare-bones” structure.

I became increasingly interested in “essentialism”, as I read about Plato’s Theory of Forms. He holds that the physical world is not as real or absolute as unchangeable ideals (which he too names Forms). For Plato, Forms are the non-physical essence of all things, where matter in the physical world are merely their imitations.

Contrary to Plato, I believe that the world of Forms is not transcendent to our own world of matter, but exists all around us. I attempt to illustrate this point by giving many unique characters, the same unifying aesthetic.

World

The “Form world” is a pure, infinite, intelligible realm. It is a pregnant whiteness, full of potential, rather than a desolate and hopeless darkness. The Forms which inhabit this realm are basal systems or archetypes; sporting only the essentials necessary in representing the various concepts that I cover.

I toy with the idea there is an archetype of each of us. Long before we are born, there exists an archetype of ourselves; our full potential. It believe it is our duty as humans to activate this potential.

Art toys

The concept of Forms has expanded into toys and products. Genefer’s designs are currently being transformed into a plushie, made of all biodegradable materials such as bamboo.

The design will also be developed into a cement pot which may hold plants such as succulents. This is a play on the idea that each of us must grow ourselves from our archetypes into our highest selves.
